Initial BlogPoll: Week 1

Things just got real. I've watched 12 games and read 50 recaps and box scores since we last met. My eyes are bleeding from football and I wouldn't have it any other way. We have a new #1, Michigan is gone, and so is Arizona (perhaps I was wrong about them). Boise State and Georgia Tech have joined the party. I shifted the poll liberally, based on what I saw and what I read. These spots aren't an entitlement, they're a reward, so if a team looks like crap, I'm dropping them. If a team looks sharp, like Louisville, they'll vault other teams. This is how I'm rocking it all season. Again, I'm open to suggestions and will adjust the poll accordingly before submitting it Wednesday. Tell me what you think.

I love my Hawkeyes, but they are not a top 25 team quite yet. Those receivers need to adjust to actually being thrown the ball, they need to adjust having a lefty throw it, and they need to adjust to the velocity in which it is thrown. I think they'll be top 20 eventually (based on the lines and the running game), but I don't buy it quite yet.

Their defense was ferocious. I am very comfortable having them in the poll. Talk to me in a month if adjustments haven't been made.

I would consider dropping Tejas a bit more. They weren't that great last year and looked pretty lame in their opener.

It was only Florida International, but Penn State looked ridiculous.

That's b/c Ned wasn't playing.

Yeah, I was surprised at the score in the Texas game too.

Texas won't stay where they are because of the name on the jersey. If they look weak this week, they will drop like a rock. Ask Spurrier.

I really thought Ned would play. He's #2 on the depth chart (and #1 in our hearts).

Yeah, 22 seems a little homerific for the Hawks. I don't doubt that they could be that god, and there were some incouraging signs in the NIU game, but I'm not sure I'm ready to have them that high yet. The drops by recievers are a big problem that really hurt the team last year as well. And while the front seven was certainly ferocious (especially when Mitch King was in the game), the secondary still had some problems. Godfrey had a nice game, but the safteies looked lost a lot of the time, and my nemesis Shada was playing too soft and missing tackles left and right.

That's not to say there aren't some good things. Christensen looked good after the first couple drives (although he was getting killed by drops), and the running game was great. That O-line was much better than I would have expected with Richardson being out. Definitely some potential here, I'm just not ready to call them a top 25 team yet.

I was very, very sad to not see Ned in action. Perhaps he was outside regulating on some tailgaters.

I am presently unable to describe the amount of pain that will be heaped on whoever starts at QB for Notre Dame next weekend. If you think they had a rough time against Georgia Tech, just wait until none of the offensive linemen can hear the snap count.

Count me as a vote for flipping PSU and Texas. The Horns should be penalized for a lackluster performance as much as South Carolina and VT.

:adam: You're high again, aren't you?

:RUTS: I think Clausen may well get killed.
*reaches for popcorn*

:Blythe: Other than Louisville, you guys looked most impressive. We'll see what happens against Da U this week if we want a little more realistic appraisal.

:Hawkeye State: PSU wasn't exactly playing a great team either. I think we'll have a better handle on both teams after this weekend.

So we're keeping FSU there, right?

JHC said...

Um, no. I was thinking of throwing Clemson in there.
Or Da U.

Ooh, yeah, let's get the U in there! HELL 2 DA NAW!

And, yes, PSU played a pretty awful team, but at least they beat them like an awful team. Can't say the same for UT.
